So, I have mentioned before that I love food bargains, could be a great sale, but what I have been working on lately is wasting less food. So I have challenged my self to spend $25 a week on groceries. So the first thing that I have been doing is eating from my pantry.
Here are a few items that I have to use up: dried mushrooms, canned crab meat and escargot...stay tuned for what I end up making with this.
So quick, run into your pantry, what do you have in there that you need to use? I'm happy to make any suggestions. One random poster will receive a prize for posting what is their pantry.

Canned mixed vegetables, canned corn, chili beans
Black-eyed peas, yams and whole wheat spiral pasta.
Brian, I would be challenged on mix veggie front. I might used them in veggie stock. Corn and chili no problem to use. What do you use the mixed veggies for?
Stephanie, that is a whole meal right there! Black-eyed peas for New Year's of course. I add pasta to my salads just a bit to make them more filling and it is less calories that a big bowl of pasta.
My little friend L. went right to the oreo ice cream cones in the cabinet (who knew they were even in there). I think we'll have some cones this week.
a box of corn starch, stone-hard brown sugar, and whole hazelnuts (Fun game, Susan!)
I recently cleaned out my pantry, but managed to keep homemade jars of pickled peppers, pickled fiddleheads and a jar of "dilly beans".
Jeanne, ohhh, the corn starch you can just save, but be sure to check the expiration date. I like to check twice a year and toss items that are bad (baking soda for cooking is another culprit). For the stone hard brown sugar, there are a few things to try, one is put in a piece of break and put in an airtight container. Leave a few days.
Now for the hazelnuts, I love a hazelnut crust for lemon bars. Here is one recipe (http://www.contracostatimes.com/top-stories/ci_16769272?source=pkg&nclick_check=1). That was a good one.
Nell, oh, a real challenge! So I think you need an antipasto platter with your yummy peppers and beans! I would add a fun cheese like Havarti with Dill, a spicy meat like a Hot Salametti Secchi and a sweet meat like Mortadella with Pistachios. Now for the hard part, the fiddle-heads. How about eggs benedict with the ferns instead of the ham? Let me know what you think.
now I'm simply drooling! Good going Susan, think I'll pick up those cheeses and meats for my "boxing" day party! thanks!
